Linear algebra and thermodynamics together lead to a law of entropy in metabolic networks. Since the analysis and techniques presented here are simple, they can easily be applied to large-scale metabolic networks. Acknowledgement Part of this work was done while the first author was visiting the International Computer Science Institute at Berkeley. He would like to thank Prof. Richard Karp for helpful discussions. We also thank Prof. Robert Laughlin of the department of Physics at Stanford for his support of this project.

In the innovation phase, we hope to use the lessons learned from the previous phases to drive entirely new processes and models. New, distributed web-services models tend to be disruptive and thereby enable change. We hope, in good CI form, that there will be a redefinition of how research is conducted across organizational boundaries, something I believe the MARCE project, the NIAID RCE Network, the BRC Network and the Biodefense Proteomic Research Centers38 can help prototype both within their own networks as well as across networks.
