But if we honestly observe ourselves, we will see that this is true. All the things we chase after in the mistaken belief that they will make us happy only give us brief periods of pleasure, at best. Externals can’t make us truly happy; but genuine happiness is our natural state when all of the things that impede happiness—such as our expectations, judgments, attachments, and fears—no longer get in the way. Additionally, there are specific roots of genuine happiness that can be directly cultivated.

Others have imaginary conversations, in order to view themselves in a positive light or as a way to make their case. And some spend hours in random daydreams, totally lost to the present. Again, even though none of these tendencies are particularly harmful, none ultimately makes us happier, except in the most superficial, temporary way. Other forms of thinking are more pernicious. Blaming, in particular, is a way of poisoning our lives, and when the blaming thoughts come out of our mouths, or manifest outwardly via body language, they also poison others.

Yet they’re often at work, impacting the way we relate to the world. In a way, they’re like the background operating system programs on our computers, running continuously and inexorably behind the scene. ” We may never say these exact words to ourselves, and the message may be buried in the background, but as we observe ourselves, we will become increasingly aware of its imprint on how we live. In some of us, this message manifests through trying harder to measure up; in others, it comes through in hiding to avoid failure; and for many, it surfaces through finding distractions, ways of numbing ourselves from the pain of holding on to our beliefs.
