According to Martin the main genre of a textbook is the report, which is defined as a logical presentation of information around a theme. The report genre is informative, is not cast as a story, and is marked by abstract descriptions of the behaviour of generic participants (classes, categories or groups) rather than linear narratives of events happening to individuals (as in a conventional story). Timeless verbs are used in the simple present tense, and there is a high frequency of ‘being’ and ‘having’ clauses.

While scientific articles can be understood by the peer group of scientists for whom they are designed, there seems little doubt that professional scientific writing also sets boundaries round the profession. It requires long training and much time and effort to learn how to read and write the arcane professional science genre (a problem spreading to all academic writing in the social sciences and humanities as well). It may now have become impossible to write professional science that can be understood beyond the immediate peer group.
